Shein groups is a much talked-about e-commerce fashion Retail Company in China, yet unlike its competitors, JD.com and Alibaba, the majority of people in its own nation are unaware of its existence. This is as a result of its intended western audience. According to analytics companies Annie and Sensor Tower, it overtook Amazon in May of this year to take the top spot as the most downloaded shopping app for Android and iOS in the US. Additionally, it is accelerating in the UK: as of August 10th, Annie placed the app top in the Google Play store for shopping and fourth on iOS.
Shein was valued at $15.8 billion (£11.bn) by market research platform CB Insights in the year ending August 2020, with expected sales exceeding $10 billion (£7.2 billion). The business withholds financial information.
Shein’s attractiveness lies in its stylish, house-brand designs at very cheap prices: trench coats are only £28.49, mini-dresses start at £5.49, and jewellery is as little as 50p.
Its website updates its womenswear “new in” category on a daily basis. Its website displayed 6,531 new goods on August 11th. In contrast, Asos has 3,563 goods listed in its “new in today” category, while Boohoo’s only has 177, none of which specifies what time period this represents. Asos also sells merchandise from other companies.
Shein does this via an agile network of suppliers in China, who purportedly deliver designs to market in as little as three days, says Chinese ecommerce specialist Matthew Brennan.
